Simply because your child has difficulty learning or studying doesn’t mean he suffers from a learning disability. Every student faces some or the other problem in the educational process, which needn’t always be a symptom of a learning incapacity. So, how does one identify if your child is afflicted by a learning disability or not?
A selection of signs can point towards the existence of a learning disability. To begin with, kids having such disabilities usually show delayed development. Such slow rate of progress can be corrected through special teaching programs.
Below average accomplishment and the inability of your child to perform in consistency with his age can be another warning symptom of a learning disability. In case your kid is not able to learn in spite of continual interventions, his incapacity might be grave.
Some other symptoms that will signal a learning incapacity are listed below:
* Grades do not reflect the amount of efforts made.
* Needs time to understand even the most straightforward of things.
* Finds it tough to memorize.
* problem in translating what is written.
* May have communication difficulties.
* Inability to use the acquired skills.
* Low on self respect.
As well as these signs, children having learning disabilities also go through many behavioral changes. Such changes could be both- external and external. In case your kid suffers from internal changes, it is very much possible that these changes pass thru unobserved. But kids with external behavioral changes usually bother others around them.
In case the behavioral changes of a learning disability are internal, you will notice that your child does not show interest in almost anything. Such children typically like to keep quiet and remain inside themselves. They tend to be unsystematic and unmindful of their environment. Retraction is another serious symptom among such kids.
External behavioral changes as a consequence of learning disability can simply be spotted. Kids who have external behavior changes have a tendency to become loud and loud. They mostly seek attention and can go to any extent to snatch it, that may even involve giving out wrong answers in the class. Aggression and ruthlessness tends to become the key marks of their nature.
If you notice any of these signs or signals in your child, chances are that he may be suffering from a learning disability. In case you find any of these symptoms in your child, start keeping a track of his activities. This can help you understand his behavior better. Also, make a note of the methods that you are using to handle his problem. Take your child to the doctor at the earliest to have a correct diagnosis of the problem done.
In the final analysis, if you suspect a learning incapacity, it’s time you keep a track on your child.

This is quite interesting. I have a nephew who has quit school two years in a row. At first it was because of bullying, and then we just thought he was simply lazy and not used to a structured environment. But two years in a row is alarming really. Maybe he has underlying learning disability that has yet gone undetected.
Hi Vera,
Sorry to hear that. I guess awareness really helps a lot for the parents and the relatives initiate that the child be checked if these signs are observed. It is better to give these things a priority because it will always be better to know what to do and how to relate best to the child as soon as he/she is diagnosed with learning delay or disability.
